Whether something is a necessity or a luxury obviously depends person to person. Packing for a 6 month trip forces one to categorize everything into one of the two categories and leave all but the most cherished items in the latter category at home.
I packed on the light side since schlepping a big suitcase or backpack to city after city would get old really fast, especially in places where ground transportation is inconvenient/nonexistent. What follows is a fairly comprehensive list of what I decided to bring on my trip. Let me know what you think.

Do you know how to use your sewing kit?
You need more socks.
Definitely more socks. You should try some Smartwool, great for long-hikes. Also, you should carry a 8"x10" glossy photo of my handsome face, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face anytime!
4 pairs of socks doesn't sound like a lot but I'll be wearing the Keen walking sandals as much as possible so the socks are only for chilly weather or slightly formal occasions.
i had one friend wear all his clothes when he went on his trip, i.e., wear all six pairs of underwear, all 4 pairs of sox, etc. thus, you can eliminate the suitcase. :-)
